In last winter’s bulletin, we shared the story of Valérie, one of our residents who grew up in a dysfunctional family and is a survivor of sexual and mental abuse.  Since her arrival at Logifem, the support and stability she has found has brought her great comfort. In a short time, Valerie has established a routine for her family – a goal she’s worked hard to achieve. For her and her two children, who have never experienced family meals, never had a hygiene routine or even made their bed, it is a great accomplishment. After living at the shelter for nearly a year, Valerie, and her son and daughter, who are 5 and 11 years old, are ready for the next chapter in their lives – to move into a bright and spacious apartment and call it home!

Logifem offers six newly renovated transitional apartments for mothers and their children, allowing them to gain independence and the opportunity to stabilize their financial situation. The residents pay a subsided rent, equivalent to 25% of their income, and can stay in the apartments for up to three years. It is in one of these apartments that Valerie and her children will be able to continue their journey.

Valerie is excited and relieved that for the next three years she’ll be able to give her children a stable home, something she has been promising them for years. She’s looking forward to decorating and setting down roots – a first for her. Her children are already registered for school, her youngest is starting kindergarten and is delighted that he’ll be going to the same school for the next few years.

Yet part of her is really nervous, “It’s been over five years that we’ve shared a bedroom, it’s going to be strange for each of us to have our own rooms”.  She’s also worried about cooking meals because it’s not something that she has done in the past.  But thanks to Logifem, she is prepared. She has collected her favourite recipes from Chef Beatrice, Logifem’s cook, and plans on hanging up Beatrice’s photo in the kitchen as inspiration. She has even established mealtime rules once they move in: no computers at the dinner table!

Still fragile, yet full of courage and determination, Valerie will benefit from the ongoing support of her Intervention Worker as she continues to grow and work on her personal goals. Her family will continue to be part of Logifem’s caring and reassuring community and will be invited to participate in our activities.

Although she has made great progress, Valerie still sees challenges ahead, and the support of Logifem will be ever-present to help her and other women continue to gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed and support themselves and their families. We are confident that Valerie will discover what Logifem already knows – that she is a champion for herself and her children. We are very proud of her strength and perseverance.

One third of the women that come to Logifem are MOMS,at least half of whom have suffered conjugal violence. These families need a safe, loving and encouraging environment to get back on their feet. Logifem is there for them.
