The women and children that come to Logifem are in a transitional phase in their lives. Although they all have different life objectives, they share a basic need: to find housing stability. Their stay at Logifem gives them the time, support and the financial leeway to look for housing that best suits their needs. Once they’ve found a place, we assist with the move; we provide emotional and financial support and help with the logistics. We all know that moving is one of the top stressors in life. Can you imagine how much more stressful it must be when you’ve been struggling with housing instability, have limited financial resources and a limited social network?
That’s why it was important to us to offer this service and fortunately we can thanks to the partnership with Barkley Transport Inc. The bonus: Barkley has a social mission and hires employees that come from low income marginalized backgrounds. A win win!
For smaller moves, we have volunteers involved throughout the process, keeping costs down. Help ranges from assisting residents that struggle with mental health issues packing boxes, loading the truck or driving our car.
Our moving service even includes wish lists so that residents can choose items they need for their new home. Where do these items come from? Volunteers pick up donations from community members and generous donors drop off household items that we then pass on to our residents.
Following a workplace campaign at the RBC Dominion Securities office at McGill College and a funding request to the RBC Foundation, Logifem received over $9,000 along with new household items such as microwaves, cookware and linen.
Thank you to everyone who is helping our residents make a new start.
