Logifem, a shelter for women in difficulty
If you are experiencing difficulties and are looking for shelter and support to get by, do not hesitate to call us at 514-939-3172.
What is Logifem?
Logifem provides shelter and support to women with and without children in Montreal.
Our main residence has 14 private rooms for women and six larger rooms to accommodate women with children. There are also shared bathrooms and shared areas. The maximum stay is for one year.
We also have 13 transitional apartments, six of which are reserved for single mothers. The maximum stay is three years. Women pay 25% of their income as rent and must have a social reintegration project, including a professional or a return to school project. It is normally necessary to go through the first residence to have access to an apartment.
For who?
Logifem accepts all women regardless of their difficulties, their status, their origin or the language they speak. However, they must meet the following criteria:
- Be between 18 and 65 years old.
- Being physically able to use the stairs to the third floor and perform various tasks assigned to residents each week: washing dishes, cleaning one of
- the bathrooms, etc.
- Be able to pay the monthly contribution covering all meals and access to the washer, dryer, television and computer:
- 400 $ for a single room
- 50 $ per child six months old or older
- (There is a possibility of making payment arrangements if you have temporary financial constraints, please contact the welcome staff to discuss your situation).
- In the case of a drug or alcohol addiction problem, have a follow-up / therapy.
- Take any medication as prescribed (medicine is kept in the intervention office).
- Be willing to have a psychosocial follow-up by a worker.
- Commit yourself to respect the rules of the house.
- Have children 12 years old or younger.
We try to communicate the essentials with the women hosted regardless of their spoken language and we can call interpreters as needed. However, we can only promise services in French and English. Some of our speakers speak other languages (Creole, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Lingala).
How are we helping?
Logifem can help you if you live a difficult situation by offering a safe place to live, a private room, three meals a day and three snacks, a laundry room and internet access.
Beyond a response to your material needs, Logifem provides psychosocial monitoring for all women hosted. Upon your arrival, you will be greeted by a psychosocial worker who will support you and accompany you throughout your stay. Each week, you will meet for approximately 45 minutes with this worker. She will try to support you in achieving objectives that you have identified yourself. This help can be translated by attentive listening, support, information, support for certain procedures and referrals to other useful resources.
Testimony of a resident: “With Logifem, we help you and show you how beautiful life is, that we are here to move forward, not dwell on the past and on the problems. If we are here, it is to put them aside, and settle them one by one slowly, but surely”.
Where?
Logifem is a shelter located in the southwestern region of Montreal near a metro station. We do not communicate the address on the website to promote the security of the premises. The exact location is communicated to the woman once she is accepted as a resident.
What are the steps to live there?
- Call Logifem at 514-939-3172. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week We will then invite you to our next information session. If you need shelter immediately, we will also be able to direct you to the appropriate resources.
- Attend the information meeting: If you wish to stay at Logifem, come and take part in an information session, which usually takes place on Tuesday afternoons, to find out more about the services provided. Women interested in Logifem can then then fill out an application form and discuss their situation with our welcome staff.
- Keep in touch: Afterwards, the work team will make sure that Logifem is the right resource for you. It is possible that there is a waiting period before a room is available (ranging from a few days to a few months). It is important to call back every week to renew your interest. The welcome staff will contact you when a room is available and discuss the final details with you.
How long?
You can stay at the shelter for up to one year.
We also have transitional apartments that, when available, are provided to women who have previously stayed at Logifem. The rent is 25% of income and women can stay there up to three years. You must have permanent resident or citizenship status and meet other criteria of the Municipal Housing Office of Montreal to have access.
