Here at Logifem one of the highlights of the summer is our summer camp. Each year we take our residents into the countryside for a few days of forest walks, canoeing, camp fires, gentle sports and relaxing. The camp is a great opportunity for residents to relax and to get out of the city, something most of them cannot afford to do. This year more residents than ever have signed up for camp and so we had to send our Operations Supervisor, Pauline Richard, to get her minibus driver’s license!
We have several projects we want to get completed before the end of the summer. Firstly, we are hoping to add a ramp and automatic doors to the front of our shelter to allow easier access for mothers with strollers. This project will be funded largely by the Trafalgar School for Girls students who won a $5,000 grant for us by competing in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative. Thank you! Our other significant building project will be to divide our last dorm room into single bedrooms. We believe that when a woman arrives at Logifem at a very difficult time in her life having a space of her own is hugely beneficial. We divided our other dorm rooms in 2013 and are excited to eliminate the last of them this year.
As you may be aware from previous newsletters, our funding from World Vision for our Mother/Child Intervention Worker will be coming to an end this Fall. We are currently in the process of evaluating all that we have learned over the last few years of increasing our services for women with children and of establishing a funding plan so that this work can continue.
So that’s what we’ll be doing this summer! And of course many staff members will take well deserved vacation. Whatever you have planned, I hope you have a great summer!
