Homelessness Prevention
Preventing homelessness among women means stepping in before a situation deteriorates — and staying present afterward. Upstream, our prevention program and our partnership with PÉTAL help find solutions to prevent homelessness whenever possible. After a woman moves into permanent housing, our post-shelter program supports long-term housing stability and helps prevent a return to homelessness.
Preventing homelessness before shelter admission
-
Logifem's prevention program (open to all women on our waitlists) offers personalized support to all women, with or without children, who are waiting for a spot in a shelter and living in — or at risk of — precarious housing situations.
This service has several objectives:
- Preventing homelessness by acting as a safety net before a situation deteriorates;
- Avoiding the need for shelter admission when alternative solutions can be put in place;
- Starting rehousing efforts early;
- Reducing the length of a shelter stay when shelter admission is necessary.
Once on the waitlist, women who wish to receive support are followed by a psychosocial intervention worker, who assesses their needs and provides immediate help — whether through housing referrals, legal support, mediation with a landlord, or other community resources. In some cases, women are able to stabilize their situation without ever needing to enter a shelter.
To access the pre-shelter service, you can reach us directly at 514-939-3172, 24/7.
Preventing a return to housing instability
-
Logifem's post-shelter program (for former residents) supports women as they move into permanent housing, following a stay at our shelter or in a transitional apartment.
This step marks a key milestone on the path to independence. Access to permanent housing does not mean the need for support ends. Flexible support, adapted to each woman's reality and pace, remains essential to sustaining long-term stability.
Offered for up to 18 months, this personalized support includes help with moving and settling into the new home, ongoing psychosocial follow-up at varying levels of intensity, support in consolidating gains made (coping skills, social ties, day-to-day independence), and referrals to community and institutional resources in the new living environment.
Preventing evictions
-
The PÉTAL program supports households facing rent payment difficulties through a coordinated approach bringing together tenants, landlords, and community partners, with the goal of promoting housing stability and preventing the need for emergency shelter.
Logifem is a partner of PÉTAL (Prévention des évictions au Tribunal administratif du logement), alongside Mission Old Brewery and Maison du Père.
Within this partnership, Logifem works specifically with women, bringing expertise tailored to their reality and that of their children.
